FAFO: When Finding Out Means Finding Yourself

“I thought the lesson was who betrayed me. The real lesson was discovering that I could lose them and still find myself.” — MK Reign

Hey Sis,

Most people hear FAFO as a warning. It usually means someone pushed too far, crossed the wrong line and is about to discover the consequences. But when I wrote “FAFO,” I wanted to turn that phrase inward. I did not want this song to be about threatening somebody else. I wanted it to be about the moment I finally discovered myself.

I wrote this song from the other side of disappointment. I had already been blindsided, drained and let down by people I believed would always be there. I knew what it felt like to keep showing up for relationships where the input never matched what I was putting out. I gave my time, my patience, my support and my love, only to watch certain people disappear when I needed them to return even a fraction of it.

That kind of betrayal changes you, especially when it comes from people inside your circle. It can make you question your judgment, your value and everything you thought those relationships meant. But eventually, I stopped asking why they left and started paying attention to what their absence revealed.

🎶“Disappointments and setbacks is how I grew.
F'd around and found out I’m stronger than I knew.”

I found out I was happier protecting my peace.

I found out it was okay when people decided to leave.

I found out disappointments and setbacks had not destroyed me. They had introduced me to a strength I did not know I possessed.

That is the real meaning of FAFO for me.

The “finding out” was not my punishment. It was my awakening.

I also wanted this song to speak honestly to Black women who have been expected to carry everyone and everything without ever appearing tired. We are often celebrated for our strength while our pain is overlooked. We are praised for surviving situations we should never have been required to endure.

With “FAFO,” I wanted to reject the belief that suffering is the most impressive thing about us. Not only is my healing impressive, but my peace is a showstopper and my ability to choose myself without guilt should be studied!

🎶“No more pleading my case that I’m the real deal. I’m legit. No longer interested in convincing people that nothing gets better than this.”

One of the most personal images in the song is the idea that my tears watered my planted seeds. That does not mean I am grateful to the people who caused them. They brought the storm, but they do not get credit for my garden. I cultivated that growth. I decided that the pain would not define me. I chose what happened next.

I also stopped pleading my case to people committed to misunderstanding me. I stopped trying to squeeze myself into relationships and spaces that were never designed to honor me. I no longer needed to convince anyone that I was genuine, worthy or enough.

Walking away became my evidence.

By the end of “FAFO,” I am not asking to be chosen or waiting to be rescued. I am not searching outside myself for the thing that will finally make me complete.

I found out that joy looks good on me. I found out greatness is my destiny. I found out that I am capable of surviving the loss without losing myself.

And after everything I searched for, everything I endured and everything I released, I discovered the greatest truth of all:

The whole damn blessing was me the whole damn time!

Now, go be great!
